I started seeing amazing kaleidoscope images pretty early on, where people repeat mirrored versions of the same image to create beautiful patterns. People have used Diptic as an artistic tool in ways that are completely different than what we envisioned when we built it. What has surprised you the most about Diptic? CAMERAtan recreates that experience of getting beautiful, unexpected results. Before I started using my phone to take pictures, I was a big into Lomography and toy cameras. My favorite photography app is CAMERAtan. After “trying on ” dozens of others, we finally decided that we wanted to keep the name, although we changed the spelling to make it original and easier to pronounce.ģ. What other apps do you like to use (photography or non photography)? Internally we called it “Diptych ” from the beginning, but we didn ’t plan on keeping that name. I think the hardest thing was actually picking the name. Once we had the idea, a plan for the UI and a developer, creating the app was pretty straightforward. I did a search for apps that could do this, and frankly I was surprised to discover that there weren ’t any in the App Store already.Ģ. What was the biggest challenge when creating Diptic?ĭiptic was the first iPhone app any of us at Peak had worked on, so we had to learn everything. When I started getting into iPhoneography, I wanted to be able to put together diptychs right on my phone, rather than having to jump over to Photoshop on my Mac. I ’ve been a fan of the diptych format ever since I was first introduced to it in a middle school art class. If you love Diptic, then you have Rhia to thank! Rhia originally thought of the app in 2010 and is a driving force in Diptic ’s updates and improvements. Evil in Austin Powers…But I digress.Īs part of our celebration, we thought it would be fun to give you a sneak peak behind the scenes of Diptic by interviewing the creator of the app. I ’ll be honest, every time I hear or say “one million, ” all I can think of is Dr. Minor Adjustments: Once you select which images you want to use, you can use Diptic’s Transform area to mirror images or rotate them.Diptic recently celebrated a huge milestone: One million downloads! This means that over a million people have had the opportunity to try our little app. While the adjustments are basic, they provide a quick method for changing the look of a photo, such as converting a color image to black-and-white. After tapping an image, a pop-up menu appears with three slider bars that adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation on the selected image. When you select the Effects area, you can perform a few basic edits. There’s one more stop before saving your final work, and that is the Effects area. Simply tap on an image, and select the action you want to perform. The Transform area allows you to mirror any of the images, or rotate them 90 degrees at a time. Once every section is filled with an image, you can make adjustments. This can be frustrating with certain layouts, but the limitation ultimately prevents you from having images that don’t completely fill sections, leading to awkward-looking results and ruining the app’s simplicity. Note that you cannot actually crop the image, though-the aspect ratio always remains the same. Use pinching gestures to shrink and expand the image. You can move and position the selected image however you want.
