Step 2: Press your clutch in and put your shifter where first gear is. So if you put it into whatever gear position is gear 1 it will be gear 1L (depending on transmission of course). Step 1: The first time you load into the game every time the gearbox is going to be set to low range and the splitter will be in low. I will explain specific transmissions further in this guide. It's worth noting that I'm describing this in general terms with no specific transmission in mind. "Why", you may ask? Well, there are times when cornering or maneuvering that you are going to need to press those buttons with one hand on the shifter and one hand on the wheel. So let's jump right into how we shift a manual gearbox in a semi. You basically want to put these buttons somewhere that you can reach easily with one hand on the wheel and one hand on the shifter. The first thing I would like to say is on where to map these gears. Now it's time to explain how to use them. So I've shown you in the last section what allows us to get all these gears on our truck. In the next section I will explain using these keys. These buttons are going to be used to get all those lovely gears that a gearhead like myself loves. One is labeled "Shifter Toggle: 1" and the other is labeled "shifter toggle: 2". In our control settings (see images below) there are two very important hot keys that we have to set up. So how do we then magicly split these gears in half and put them into low and high range? This is where are our control settings within the game come in. Then there is a high range and a low range that when switched gives you another 4 forward gears which are then, again, split into high and low. It's actually 5 forward gears which are then split in half with what's called a splitter. In actual fact there aren't 18 gears in an Eaton Fuller 18 speed for one. Let's continue our example of the Eaton Fuller 18 speed. This comes from the way a truck transmission is set up. So how is this possible? How can we get 18 gears out of only 6 positions? In fact, there are even some trucks in real life that have up to 24 gears. You might look at an Eaton Fuller 18 speed and say to yourself, "I have 6 gear positions and there are 18 gears!". I think the first thing people notice when they first start looking at manual semi transmissions is the number of gears there are. I could work on Cats of the time Allis Chalmers and The old gas start I H diesels and the Detroits but never got into Cummins till i owned my own. back then only because i learned how to work on them. About a year after i started driving it we did and engine swap to a 711 with a turbo with the fuel turned up. When i first started driving the Mack it was a gas burner with a big 6 cylinder and here again i don't know much about that one i just know it got 3.5 MGP and a 150 gallon did not take you far. I drove the B61 Mack that pulled the 50 ton Rodgers Lowboy, i would haul what ever up to 100000 lbs John my boss drove the Autocar, Willis drove the White Mustang with the 35 ton Rodgers and Jessey drove the other White Mustang with the other 35 ton. First off i was and operating engineer, Next on the list was mechanic / Welder /machinist/ mexican drag line operator / Grade man / farm hand /go fetch this or that parts runner/ powderman/ and at the bottom of the list lowboy truck driver. with being one of the full time employee's i wore many hats. Driving truck was a necessary evil that went with my job. at that time in my life it was all about drag racing and not truck engines. Last time i saw that tractor was end of June 1966 and i do not remember the model number of it i think it was a 1960 model the Mack was a 57 B model engine was was and industrial cummins like what was in a couple Cranes/ Shovels way bigger then what was in normal trucks. I should have just dropped it in direct and come down on the brakes and grabbed each hole in the main on the way, then I would have looked like a pro. The driver was next to me, obviously impressed. To go up a hole I dropped the brownie out of over and dropped the rpms way down to catch under, knock the main out and go up to normal rpm to go to the next gear. I don't see why anyone would shift two sticks at once. I went up through all the gears like a pro. I set the brownie in 2nd, grabbed 2nd in the main and took off. It was a 10 wheeler with an end dump not loaded but a load of itself. I got my chance once and jumped in an old Pete with a 318 Detroit and 4x4. I did a lot of figuring how to drive one. There were a lot of 4x4's out west here back in the '70's-'80's.
